The "Sandwich Generation Crisis: Easing Dual Burdens on Malaysian Families" event, organized by ISIS Malaysia, the Social Wellbeing Research Centre (SWRC), UNICEF, and the World Bank, took place at the ISIS auditorium on 12 January 2025. The event shed light on the challenges Malaysian families face as caregivers balancing the needs of both ageing parents and young children. SWRC's Dr. Amjad Rabi and Prof Datuk Norma Mansor addressed the emotional, financial and psychological strains these families endure. The urgent need for policy reforms to provide better support systems for caregivers and the importance of community-based assistance was highlighted. The discussion called for a substantial overhaul of social welfare programmes to alleviate these dual burdens, advocating for a more supportive and sustainable caregiving environment in Malaysia. Key recommendations included expanding access to affordable care services, providing financial assistance and implementing policies that recognise the critical role of caregivers in society.
