The Social Wellbeing Chair (SWC) was established at Universiti Malaya through an endowment fund from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). Since its establishment, SWC has served as a centre of excellence for multidisciplinary research, supporting national policy development through evidence-based studies, strategic partnerships, and knowledge dissemination in social protection and retirement security.
The Social Wellbeing Chair (SWC) was established through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and Trust Deed signed on 25 August 2008 between Universiti Malaya and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). The Chair was created to strengthen policy research relating to social security, retirement income adequacy and pension reforms in Malaysia.
Initially housed under the Faculty of Business and Accountancy, the Chair was transferred to the Faculty of Economics and Administration in 2011. Today, it operates under the Social Wellbeing Research Centre (SWRC), continuing its commitment to producing high-quality research that informs national policy and contributes towards sustainable social wellbeing.
