The Strategic Partnership Agreement Exchange Ceremony between Universiti Malaya and the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) was held on 18 August 2026 to commemorate the renewal of the strategic partnership between both institutions for the 2026–2030 period. The ceremony reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing social protection, strengthening institutional collaboration and promoting sustainable social wellbeing in Malaysia.
The event highlighted the longstanding collaboration between Universiti Malaya, through the Social Wellbeing Research Centre (SWRC), and PERKESO in undertaking impactful research, supporting evidence-based policymaking, strengthening institutional capacity and developing initiatives that contribute to more inclusive and effective social protection systems.
In conjunction with the ceremony, a panel discussion entitled "Bridging the Social Protection Divide: Reforming Coverage for Gig and Informal Workers" brought together experts to examine the challenges and opportunities associated with extending social protection coverage to workers in Malaysia's rapidly evolving labour market.
The discussion underscored the importance of addressing protection gaps faced by gig and informal workers, while exploring policy approaches that can strengthen accessibility, inclusivity and long-term social security for Malaysia's workforce.
