On 7 March 2018, University of Malaya representing the Social Security Research Centre (SSRC) and the Regents of the University of Michigan officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU was signed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya, Datuk Ir. (Dr.) Abdul Rahim Hashim and Professor Dr. David Weir, the Director of Health and Retirement Study and also a Research Professor in the Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan.
The MoU marked the outset of collaboration between the two universities for one of the centre’s flagship projects, namely the Malaysia Ageing and Retirement Survey (MARS).
The MoU is an important step for promoting collaborative efforts in survey research, academic exchange, and the initiation of new research projects in economics and other social sciences between the two universities. The agreement will highlight the role of MARS in understanding ageing and retirement issues in Malaysia. Notably, MARS is a promising research initiative for preparing the country to face the challenges in an ageing society.
